Choosing a Primary School in Singapore

How to choose a suitable primary school?

Choosing a suitable primary school for your child depends on a balance between the child needs and the parents preferences.
You may need to understand and figure out a few different considerations before you decide.
The primary school years are important. It is a foundational basis for your child’s learning journeys.
There are 6 practical areas to consider when choosing a suitable primary school for your child learning journeys:

The Child's Interests

Each school has its own activities, programmes and co-curricular. You should consider your child’s interests in arts, maths, sports or music then select a suitable school to learn and develop the child interests and strengths.

Travel Time and Distance to School

Selecting a school near your home saves time and travel costs. A shorter commute lets your child rest well and have more time and energy to focus on the studies or other interests.

Mother Tongue Languages

Studying a Mother Tongue Language (MTL) will help your child appreciate the cultural heritage in Singapore.
There are three official mother tongue languages in our national curriculum: Chinese, Malay and Tamil.
Find out from your preferred primary schools if they offer lessons in the mother tongue of your choice.
Use schoolfinder to learn about the Mother Tongue Language offered by each school.

School Culture & Affiliation

Research the school’s approach to learning, extra-curricular activities, and any affiliations with secondary schools.
Visit the school’s open house to understand the school’s culture and learning environment. You can talk to the current students, teachers and principal to learn more about the school. What each school has to offer in terms of its programmes, facilities, values, and school culture.
Take the opportunity to browse through the schools’ websites to learn more.
Visit schoolfinder to short-list the schools before you visits the open house.

Special Educational Needs

If you know your child has special educational needs, consider choosing a school that caters to their learning needs.
Children with special educational needs may require additional support in school. Learn more about the support in mainstream schools and special education schools. How to get the necessary support and help for your child needs.

Single-Sex versus Co-education

Some parents have preferences about single-sex or mixed co-educational schools. In Singapore, there are plenty of options for both types of primary school. You may find one type of school more advantageous than the other.
Children with a sibling already studying at the primary school get priority and guaranteed placement, to enter Primary One. For the logistics-wise, it is easier to send your children, in same school and fetch them home. Your child may feel more at ease, knowing that the sibling is in nearby class. Especially on the first day of school, that can be quite alarming for the younger child.

Religion

Choosing a primary school in Singapore based on religion can be a great way to ensure that your child's education aligns with your family's values and beliefs. If you’re considering a religiously affiliated school, it’s good to make sure you’re aware and comfortable with what your child will be exposed to religious services and songs.
When choosing a school, consider factors such as the school's proximity to your home, its academic reputation, and the extracurricular activities it offers. It's also a good idea to visit the schools and talk to the principal or teacher to get a feel for the school's environment and culture.

Child’s Talents and Interests

Choosing a primary school in Singapore based on your child's talents and interests is a fantastic way to nurture their potential and keep them engaged in their education.
Identify your child's strengths and passions, whether it's in arts, sports, music, or academics.
Look for schools that offer specialized programs or clubs that align with your child's interests.
Some schools offer programs like the Gifted Education Programme (GEP) or Special Assistance Plan (SAP) for students with specific talents or needs.
Schools with excellence awards, in area of your child are interested. Do note that some CCAs will incur extra expenditure for training, costumes, equipment, instruments and school trips.
It's important to visit the schools, talk to the teachers, and get a sense of the school's culture to ensure it's the right fit for your child.
